Many chemicals were released into the environment from the train in Ohio. Here is a list.
Vinyl Chloride: used to make PVC piping - a colorless gas that is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and is highly flammable and decomposes to make toxic fumes. According to the National Library of Medicine, it is also carcinogenic and can cause other health issues. (makes dioxin when burned) Fat soluble.
Butyl acrylate: a clear liquid that is used for making paints, sealants and adhesives. It is flammable and can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Contains a hydrocarbon chain, so my guess is it’s fat soluble.
Ethylhexyl acrylate: a colorless liquid used to make paints and plastics. It can cause skin and respiratory irritation and, under moderate heat, can produce hazardous vapor. Fat soluble. Interesting info here on its toxicity.
Ethylene glycol monobutyl: a colorless liquid used as a solvent for paint and inks, as well as some dry cleaning solutions. It is classed as acutely toxic, able to cause serious or permanent injury, and highly flammable. Vapors can irritate the eyes and nose, and ingestion can cause headaches and vomiting. Fat soluble.
From the controlled burns:
phosgene gas: also an industrial chemical used to make pesticides and plastics and used historically in the military as a bioweapon aka mustard gas.
hydrogen chloride: the gas form of hydrochloric acid and
DIOXIN, a known human carcinogen, endocrine disruptor and prolific in the environment. It is a fat soluble toxin that accumulates in the fat cells of animals.

Ok, so that is a whole lot of chemical exposure for those in and around Ohio. Should we be concerned in the northeast? It appears most of the exposure was confined to the area (30 mile radius) with many of these gases released when the train crashed, but burning the vinyl chloride? The plume could be seen for miles and prevailing winds shows its path eastward. While air goes up, precipitation goes down. I would be concerned about any towns/cities along the water shed as well, and watch where the EPA is sending the waste water and soil from this spill. I know they will be burning some of it, and the water will be dumped into injection wells, so who knows where that water will end up. When vinyl chloride is burned, dioxin attaches to dust particles, and what makes precipitation? The accumulation of water vapor around a dust particle. While it has dispersed quite a bit (the solution to pollution is dilution, an oft used expression in the environmental industry that I used to be part of) let’s prepare anyway, ok? (and clearly the people in and around the spill should be doing this RIGHT NOW to mitigate any lasting affects of these harsh chemicals).
First and foremost in my tool box I recommend is to support the liver. LIVER, LIVER. LIVER. The liver is responsible to mange excretion of toxins, and these fat soluble toxins listed here are clearly no exception.
Support the Liver
Break Down Fat Soluble Toxins:
Milk Thistle - Silybum marianum: protects the liver from damage (hepatoprotective) and helps the liver detox. It supports all phases of detox in the liver.
Turmeric and Grapefruit: helps slow down Phase I detox, which gives the liver more time to respond to the toxin load. Things that speed up Phase I (smoking and alcohol)
Clarified Butter: studies from India indicate taking clarified butter daily (a tablespoon or more) can chelate fat-soluble toxins from the body. This also implies that a high fat diet may do the same. I’m not sure if coconut oil would do the same, but it wouldn’t hurt to do this. Support your gall bladder during this time as well, often termed phase 3 detox. Bile will be needed to excrete toxins. Keep reading on tips to do this.
B-Complex: as you can see above, B vitamins are important for liver detoxification of the blood because they provide, among other things, a methyl donor. Many people are under methylators, so getter B’s in your diet is vital for reducing chronic exposure to toxins. Eat beets and foods high in B vitamins. SAMe is a primary methyl donor, so supplementing with that may be helpful. Betaine in beets is also a methyl donor.
Vitamins E & C
Help Support Phase II Detox
Green leafy and cruciferous veggies (kale, spinach, chard) give the liver important minerals like magnesium and calcium, but they are also bitter. Bitter moves bile. Why is this important? Keep reading. Cruciferous veggies contain thiols, sulphur containing molecules that are important for the sulfation pathway. this is the pathway many of the environmental toxins are excreted. Get you some fermented saurkraut and eat it with all your meals (at least 1/4 cup).
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) a precursor to glutathione, the main anti-oxidant the liver uses to detox the blood. If you have sensitivities to sulfites, use grape seed extract instead.
Amino Acids: proteins in food, like animal protein. Taurine and glycine are also important for bile formation.
Zinc & Selenium. (take a mineral complex since taking just one or two minerals can lead to other mineral deficiencies)
Phase III Detox
Promote bile excretion: EAT BITTER FOODS. I can’t stress this enough. yes, they taste bitter. We are so used to eating sweet, we have forgotten bitter. Bitter promotes the liver and gall bladder to excrete bile and bile is the primary way toxins get out of our body. Bitter herbs:
Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale)
Burdock Root (Artium lappa)
Gentian (Gentiana lutea)
Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium)
Yellowdock (Rumex crispus)
Use in a bitter spray easily attainable in any health food store or at my shop. I make my own spray with these herbs in an apple cider vinegar base. Excellent for slow digestion, bloating, and increasing transit time. This will also ensure toxins are released properly and digestion is working properly.
Others
Vitamin A & D: immune system support and liver detoxification pathways too.
And don’t forget about eating nutrient rich foods. These are easy to spot because they are colorful. (fruits and veggies) Load up on Vitamin C, you can’t OD on those, follow bottle dosage of B vitamins, and remember to stay grounded! Don’t panic. Fear drives illness.
Let me know if you have questions! I carry all the herbs in my shop and can help you with an action plan.

Very helpful, thank you. May I ask do you have any experience with nitrosamines, derivative of sodium nitrite (E250)? I am suffering from these (facial palsy and other related side effects). This explains my research to date and original cause.
